New stabilizers for agricultural films – Tinuvin® NOR® from BASF
BASF is expanding its range of NOR® technology with stabilizers for agriculture. The products protect and extend the life of agricultural films that are permanently exposed to very strong UV radiation, high temperatures and crop protection agents.
The Tinuvin® NOR® range is based on HALS technology (Hindered Amine Light-Stabilizers) with high molecular weight. In addition, the stabilizers have a lower interaction with system components and acidic environmental pollutants than conventional HALS products.
Agricultural films are often exposed to intensive radiation from the sun and agrochemicals, where a series of complex chemical chain reactions cause the plastics to begin to decompose and eventually become brittle. By adding Tinuvin® NOR® light stabilizer to the polymer, the complex chain reactions are neutralized and the destructive reaction cascade is interrupted. This protects agricultural films, especially greenhouse films, and extends their service life.
Agrochemicals, elemental sulfur and disinfectants – including those approved for certified organic cultivation – cannot harm the stabilizer Tinuvin® NOR®. Conventional light stabilizers, on the other hand, usually have only limited resistance to such chemicals. This means that organic farmers can also produce economically and sustainably with the films. In addition, plastic waste is reduced because the films can be used for longer.
