“Glue rather than rivet” – nowhere is that more true than in the aerospace sector. With the appointment of Dipl.-Ing. Heiko Schölles (39), Bodo Möller Chemie Group is strengthening its sales team for specialty chemicals in German-speaking Europe. Frank Haug, CEO of the international specialty chemicals company believes that the aerospace industry will make much more use of bonding techniques in future: „In aeronautics, bonding technology will replace the majority of existing techniques. This is why it was important for us to strengthen our sales team in this area.” Bodo Möller Chemie’s new Sales Manager Aero, Heiko Schölles, has 12 years experience in the aeronautics sector, having worked for companies such as Airbus Deutschland, Sell Cabin Interiors (now Zodiak Aerospace) and Diehl Aircabin.

Joining technology is changing

The Airbus A350 impressively demonstrates the joining techniques of the future: in many areas special high-performance adhesives are replacing the use of rivets for joining assemblies. Apart from the outer hull, the greatest potential application for bonding techniques is in the aircraft interior. As a plastics engineer, Schölles first worked on developing materials and techniques for aircraft cabins. Subsequently he worked for Diehl Aircabin, where he was responsible for program management for the crew rest compartments of the Airbus A380 and latterly for the Airbus A350. New bonding techniques played an important role in the development of this recent model, because joining techniques have a significant influence upon energy efficiency and choice of materials. „Nowadays an important parameter is the reduction in fuel consumption per passenger that can be achieved with bonding technologies and new materials. In Heiko Schölles we have found an expert with experience of the aerospace industry,” says Frank Haug, CEO of Bodo Möller Chemie Group.

EN 9120:2010 certification

Furthermore, Bodo Möller Chemie Group’s Quality Management is certified in accordance with EN 9120:2010, the international requirements for aviation, space and defence. This demonstrates the estimated future potential of bonding technology in the aeronautics sector: „Model aeroplanes are almost exclusively glued – this technique has just as much potential in real aeronautics. That is why we are trying to expand in this area and we have every confidence that sales will grow in the aerospace sector,” explains Haug.
