Aerospace & Defense

The aerospace industry places the highest demands on technical products, materials and suppliers in many areas. In no other industry is there any greater pressure to minimise weight. Therefore, carbon fiber reinforced composite components play an important role. When bonding carbon composites with other lightweight materials such as aluminium or titanium, the adhesion to the different materials must be ensured and attention paid to specific material properties (e.g. different thermal expansion). In addition, there are the high fire requirements of aviation. Materials in the cabin must meet strict requirements with regard to their flammability, smoke gas density and fire gas toxicity (FST requirement according to FAR 25.853 or ABD 0031). As a supplier to the aviation industry, Bodo Möller Chemie has established high quality standards and is certified according to DIN ISO EN 9001, DIN EN ISO 14001 and EN 9120 for aviation.

Bonding of cabin components

Depending on the application, different requirements are placed on the adhesives in the aircraft. Primarily 2-component epoxy adhesives are used, occasionally 1-component epoxy adhesives and polyurethane-based products are also used.

Glass bonding for aerospace & defense

In helicopters, discs are usually made of plastic and thin-walled. Highly flexible adhesives with low stiffness are used for bonding so that thermal expansion and mechanical loads have little influence on the panes. Nevertheless, high adhesive strengths are required.

Local reinforcement of honeycomb cores & component edges

Core and edge fillers are used in sandwich components for the local reinforcement of honeycomb cores, e.g. when placing highly loaded inserts or attachments. Another application is the reinforcement of component edges. After hardening, these can be milled as visible edges. The products are offered in a density range from 0.5 g/cm³ to 1.8 g/cm³. Depending on the application, the focus is on lightweight construction or high compressive strength.

Maintenance, repair & cleaning of aerospace components

In the field of aviation, very high-quality resin systems are used, which are already subject to the quality requirements extended by the manufacturers. In most cases, these resin systems are optimized with regard to their fire properties and approved by the OEMs (Airbus/Boeing) for special applications.

Production of composite components for aerospace & defense

In the manufacture of composite components, the load-bearing fibers are embedded in a polymer matrix (resin system). These resin systems are available in a wide variety of variants, depending on the application and manufacturing process. There are special aerospace resin systems for aviation, some with integrated flame retardancy.

Silicone sealing of aircraft components

Silicone materials are primarily used in aviation for bonding or sealing. Silicones are characterised by their high mechanical elasticity, high temperature resistance and good fire properties.
